The Puppy Promises program running at Murray County Animal Control keeps unwanted litters of puppies out of the stressful environment of a shelter and instead delivers them to a no-kill rescue when they are old enough to travel without their mother. Rather than be surrendered to a shelter, the puppies remain in their original home for 2–4 weeks, while Saving Shelter Pets arranges for a no-kill rescue to take them. During that time, they receive a vet exam and all age-appropriate shots, with expenses paid in full by Saving Shelter Pets. And, to break the cycle of uncontrolled breeding for households that participate in the program, Saving Shelter Pets pays for the spay surgery for all mother dogs in the program, and also spay/neuter surgeries for any other dogs and cats in the participating families' households.
